This is a ten-minute experimental drama, originally written for one of my playwriting classes.
Main Idea
All their lives, Murrina and Timmens have been waiting. Now with their house halfway swallowed up by the Earth, they must decide if they’re going down with it. At their last meal, the couple argues about whether or not the end of the world is a special enough occasion to use their wedding china.
Characters
Timmens (20s) - Average husband with an average job. He doesn’t particularly aspire to be or have anything. He’s been trying to convince Murrina to go to his friend’s shelter for months.
Murrina (20s) - Restless, fed-up wife. She’s tired of living in mundanity, and a large part of her certainly wouldn’t mind getting swallowed up with the house.
Information
Genre: Existential drama
Setting: Winterset, Iowa
Staging notes: The house is technically at a massive, sloping angle, but this can be reflected in many ways, not just in set design. In fact, resist the impulse to rely on set design alone.
